Benny Fisher
London Town
Benny Fisher has released a new track “London Town,” a piece that moves away from the largely solo approach he has taken on previous home recordings. While many of his recent songs were made independently, this release was built as a more collaborative project, bringing in a wider group of musicians.
A separate remix was created by Mad Professor, whose approach relies on live mixing to analogue tape rather than detailed automation. Fisher has spoken about admiring that process, particularly the unpredictability that comes from working in real time rather than refining multiple passes. It could be that approach to the recording process that has given the whole track a very nostalgic feel in stark contrast to the very contemporary experimental, psychedelic style.

London Town starts off with a glorious bassline that draws you in as Benny's dreamlike vocals break the instrumental wall before glitching out again. The unique, playful nature of the song really gives London Town something that you will be hard pushed to find elsewhere. That bassline keeps the whole track grounded as the vocals ebb in and out.
“London Town” is accompanied by a video made by filmmaker Peter Spence, who assembled the visuals from his archive of Super 8 footage. The video focuses on personal imagery instead of any particular narrative, keeping the emphasis on texture and movement. Peter did a great job of matching the song perfectly in its style, they definitely go hand in hand.
The artwork for the release uses a painting by Victor Colesnicenco, courtesy of the Nemo Art Gallery. Overall, “London Town” reflects a shift toward a collaborative effort from many of his friends along with adopting looser production methods, while still fitting within the quieter, atmospheric side of Fisher’s work. London Town is out right now, so be sure to check it out.
