Filip Dahl
Learning to Breathe Again
Filip Dahl has a new track which was released on 21 November called Learning to Breathe Again. It is an instrumental piece, mostly built around guitar, and it stays fairly calm from beginning to end. Dahl has said the title relates to the simple act of slowing down and trying to get a bit of control back when life gets heavy. A lot of people use music as a tool for that, so the track fits that line of thinking without trying to be symbolic about it.
The single is also another example of his usual guitar tone, which has become easy to recognise on his releases. There is, intentionally, no complicated arrangement here which is refreshing. Anyone who has followed his work since his return in 2016 will recognise the approach immediately.

Back in the 1970s, Dahl started out as a guitarist for various Norwegian rock bands before branching out in to the engineering and production side of things. He helped establish Brygga Studio in Trondheim, which ended up being a well-known place through the 80s and 90s.Stepping back from the music scene for a while, he eventually returned as a solo artist. Since then, he has kept a steady pace, releasing material that moves between melodic prog, blues rock, and more layered, symphonic ideas. Among his influences are Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Kansas, Marillion, Dream Theater and that influence is clear enough, though the music is shaped by his own habits and tone rather than just imitating others.
Combining rock, prog and heavier styles, he has also worked with his brother Robert “Pzyroks” Dahl and his son Stian in the project Transcending Into the Unknown, which started in 2023 and they have since put out several singles and an EP.
'Learning to Breathe Again' continues Dahl’s pattern of releasing small, carefully crafted tracks, fitting naturally into his recent catalogue and shows him staying consistent with the sound he has been building for years.
