FLAUNT IT AND BELIEVE IT: GWAILO HARNESS HIGH-OCTANE ENERGY FOR NEW SINGLE 'YOU GOT IT'
With an empowering new single, high-tech music video, and major winter festivals on the horizon, North East rockers Gwailo prove they’ve got the swagger to match the hype.
"It’s about confidence, stepping out of your comfort zone, and not taking note of negative things people tell you—if you want to do it, just do it." — David Henry

2026 has been a very busy year for North East hard-rock outfit Gwailo. Renowned across the UK circuit for their swaggering, "bad-natured blues" and sweat-drenched live sets, the five-piece are currently transitioning from fiery local heroes to major festival regulars. Following packed summer sets at Breaking Bands and Cambridge Rock Festival, alongside high-profile support slots with the likes of Starbenders, The Karma Effect, and Thieves of Liberty the band is officially ushering in its next chapter.
Today marks the release of their high-energy new single, "You Got It", which serves as both the lead track and title song for their eagerly anticipated debut album dropping this November. To mark the release, we caught up with founder member and lead guitarist David Henry to talk about studio gear, stagecraft, and the defiant message behind their latest track.

Accompanying the single’s release is a slick, high-octane visual captured at a state-of-the-art television production studio in Sunderland. Directed by long-time collaborator Sam Taylor, the video showcases the band performing against a massive digital display wall—the kind of production hardware typically reserved for major network broadcasts. How did a rising UK rock band score access to BBC-level production technology? Pure resourcefulness.
"The video was at Sunderland University," the band explains. "They’ve got a massive screen that the BBC use, pretty serious kit! Our usual video guy, Sam Taylor, had access to it because he was finishing his degree. We were able to jump in and get the use of this screen for the shoot. Sam’s got really good vision; he brings what we want to life."
Choosing "You Got It" as both the single and album title track felt like a natural choice. It represents the first piece of music written and recorded entirely by the band's current, unified lineup. "First off, it’s just a killer song," David shares. "But this current formation of the band all worked on that one together. Some of the older songs were written before we switched drummers, but 'You Got It' is 100% all of us in this current incarnation of the band."
While the track hits all the right spots with the heavy, foot-to-the-floor rock riffage fans expect, underneath the swagger lies a deeply positive and empowering message written by lead vocalist Michael.
"The song’s basically about confidence and having the guts to wear or do something you wouldn't usually do," the band reveals. "Don't take note of negative things other people tell you. The first verse goes, 'If you're scared to try a whole new look, let me tell you now that there's no rule book... it's not your job to please, it's time that you are free.' The chorus tells you to step out of your comfort zone: 'You got it, now flaunt it, you're hypnotic.' Just try it! Have the confidence and do it." In an era dominated by online judgment, it’s a refreshing shot of pure self-belief packaged inside a hard-hitting rock anthem.

The band has conquered intimate North East venues like The Cluny and Newcastle’s iconic Trillians, Gwailo are now adapting their stage show for larger festival crowds. With massive winter appearances booked at Winterstorm in Troon and Planet Rockstock in Trecco Bay this November, learning how to command massive stages has been a learning curve.
"We’re always trying to improve our stagecraft, interacting with each other and the crowd," they reflect. "When you move to bigger stages, you just have to step out of your comfort zone and keep pushing to look and stay energetic."
Just as important to their growth has been observing the headline acts they’ve shared stages with, not just during the gig, but behind the scenes.
"You learn bits of stagecraft, but it’s also how bands behave off stage. How they interact with other bands and people. We always try to be as nice as possible to everybody we meet. It takes you a lot further than being an asshole about stuff."

For those wondering where the name comes from, David explains that it dates back to the band's previous singer who came across the slang term for "white devil" in east Asia. It is that phrase that inspired the band's striking devil-faced logo, "It was just a cool name with a bit of a backstory, instead of just picking one out of thin air."
Taking a look into the coming months, Gwailo wrap up 2026 with a homecoming run of live dates, including a return to Newcastle's legendary rock bar Trillians on 25th of November as well as a yet-to-be-announced North East headline finale on 12th of December. Their 2027 diary is already filling up with festival dates and live shows, so keep your eyes peeled on their socials.
When I asked David what advice they’d give to young bands starting out in the UK rock scene, their philosophy is simple: persistence over shortcuts.
"I used to research how bands get bigger, and you’d always see people say 'create a buzz.' There’s no secret formula. You’ve just got to keep gigging, keep creating music, and keep pushing until that happens. Just believe in yourself and keep going."
"You Got It" is available on all major streaming platforms now.
