Leeds-based artist and producer Graszhauser has added another chapter to their catalogue with the release of Good Bye, Bavaria! on 22 August. The single is a solo piano work, shaped from lived experience and recorded in the stillness of night.
The balance between spontaneity and control really makes the track stand out with improvised passages that sit beside carefully edited sections, creating a piece that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. While the piano carries the emotional core, layers of sound slip in unexpectedly with the drone of an alphorn, the ring of cowbells, even the faint strike of a triangle. The recording process was straightforward but the mastering was anything but. More than thirty versions were tested before settling on a final cut that allowed the piano tone to resonate without overwhelming smaller speakers. The end result is spare but full, a sound that holds warmth and space in equal measure.
