Pale Wizard Records recently released the fourth album in their 50-year-later series. A series of albums rerecorded by contemporary artists, each putting their own twist on classic tracks.
The latest album is a tribute to Sparks, with Kimono My House: 50 Years Later' celebrating half a century since the release of the original. Pale Wizard Records has enlisted the help of Phoxjaw, Krooked Tongue, Sergeant Thunderhoof, and more to reimagine the sound of Sparks.
Opening the album with one of Sparks' best-known songs, 'This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us', Bristol rockers Phoxjaw did a great job staying true to the original but managing to add their own unique sound to the mix.
Tony Reed's version of 'Amateur Hour' and Earl Of Hell's cover of 'Falling In Love With Myself Again' still capture the essence of the song, but with a heavier sound. Really great stuff.
With a wide variety of artists contributing to this project, there are so many highlights to the album that warrant recognition, including Sergeant Thunderhoof, whose version of 'Thank God It's Not Christmas' is just sublime, with a heavy as you like intro and silky rock vocals that make this a pretty special track.
Given the task of performing 'Hasta Mañana, Monsieur' must have been a daunting task as the original is so unique and a staple of any Sparks fan's must play tracks, but the Krooked Tongue did an amazing job, working their magic on the song to create a stunning new version that feels really upto date.
Careful consideration has been given by the project's curators to ensure that the feel of the original isn't lost, and they have definitely managed to achieve that. From start to finish, the album is a triumphant celebration of Sparks and their musical genius, which has influenced so many budding musicians.
The stunning cover art, created by Sara-Jane Swettenham, suits the album perfectly and really is a visual treat.
