RURAL TAPES
Returns with new album
'ONERIC'
Out 17th of October
Norwegian producer and multi-instrumentalist Rural Tapes (Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen) returns with Oneiric, the fourth studio album from his Rural Tapes project. The record has been released through Clay Pipe Music, and continues his focus on analogue recording and detailed sound construction featuring contributions from a wide group of collaborators.
Oneiric follows a loose structure that leans toward instrumental exploration rather than your standard song structure. Using organs, piano, brass and synths, the arrangements often blend live and electronic elements into single textures. The production isn't overly refined keeping with a clarity that allows the natural tone of each instrument to sit in the mix without losing its character.
Lingering Souls features Gary Olson who provides vocals that stay true tot the rhythm and flow rather that trying to stand out from it whilst Alexis Taylor can be heard on Retire The Fool, the track is built with minimal repetition and whit a careful sense of balance. The two vocal elements add to the shape of the record which otherwise relies on movement and layered sound to create direction.
It's the smaller details and nuances that keep your attention though, using field recordings, the pulse of the bass lines and the gentle shifts in tempo all adding to the feel of the music, back that up with Mathisen drawing on his experience as a drummer to keep the pace steady in the more abstract passages and you have a cracking combination that has contributed to a well rounded album.
Closing with Lucid Dreaming, Rural Tapes has chosen make a statement piece using many of the album's elements before finally fading out. The end result is a consistent and thoughtful record which reflects the very same patience and attention to detail that has defined Rural Tapes since their debut back in 2021.
Oneiric will be available on vinyl LP, CD, and digital/streaming on October 17th 2025 via Clay Pipe Music.
