THE ENEMY
SOCIAL DISGUISES
Reviewer: David Weddle
Coventry's finest indie rockers The Enemy are back with their brand new album Social Disguises, their first studio album since 2015's It’s Automatic, and it is a little beauty. Opener The Boxer sets the tone for the rest of the album. With the instantly recognisable vocals of Tom breaking us in with seemingly effortless power. The vocal harmonies between Tom and Andy add an extra special layer that gives it an extra bit of oomph. A cracking song to open with.
How do you follow that? Well, The Enemy stripped things back a bit with Not Going Your Way. Kicking off with a smashing bit of drumwork that makes way for crisp, clear vocals, which are at the very forefront of the song. It's a real toe-tapper. I did try to stop myself from tapping them, but to no avail; the beat got me good.
I think that sums the album up actually; every song makes you want to move. From The Boxer to the anthemic The Last Time, there is something very infectious about The Enemy’s new album. I'd love to hear how Trouble sounds when played live; that bass is just sublime. That chorus is instantly memorable and a proper earworm in the best possible way.
Social Disguises is a modern classic; it feels like a record that is packed full of energy and hidden gems, like 'Interference', which could best be described as an experimental interlude or palate cleanser for the old lugs between 'Controversial' and the title track 'Social Disguises'. They have the ability to switch gears without losing any momentum, a sign that this is a band who know exactly what each other brings to the party and makes sure we all get to hear the very best they have to offer.
You could play this album 30 years from now, and it would still be a cracking collection of tracks from a band that have really mastered their craft. It has real staying power, with any of the full length track fitting easily into any playlist. Hopefully this is a sign of more great things to come from The Enemy.
You can check the album out for yourself from the 20th of February. For more information visit: https://www.theenemyband.co.uk/
