CAVALERA
NeWCASTLE RIVERSIDE
I write this review with a ringing in my ears and a grin on my face. Being a metal fan, it was no surprise when I heard that Cavalera, the band created by Sepultura founding members and brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera, The band has been touring the world on the Third World Trilogy tour, with a stop-off in Newcastle, UK, that I would be up for checking out the show. The tour celebrates the re-recording of Schizophrenia, Bestial Devastation, and Morbid Visions, the early Sepultura albums that the band have recently revisited with fresh energy.
The venue, Riverside, is an intimate place situated on the historic quayside area of the city. Under the shadow of the Tyne Bridge, metal fans queued excitedly, dressed mainly in black and with plenty of well-worn battle jackets on display, the Newcastle crowd definitely looked the part. And speaking of locals, opening up for Cavalera were local band Kilonova. The alt-thrashers have an ever-growing, loyal fanbase thanks to their high-octane performances.
That energy was definitely in attendance, as the band got the home crowd well and truly warmed up with a very lively performance with plenty of interaction with the crowd. At one point, vocalist Ellen left the stage to stand on the barrier and get up close with the audience. The future of thrash metal is in good hands with Kilonova.

After a short break, which gave people the chance to erm.....get refreshed, and also gave the stage techs time to do their thing, it was Newcastle’s turn to witness the metal masters at work. Max Cavalera stood as an imposing figure, centre stage, dressed in a black leather jacket with a wrist full of huge silver spikes. As he looked out to the crowd and growled down the microphone, “Newcastle! Bestial Devastation," it was clear that Cavalera were here to get hard and heavy from the very start. On the drums, Iggor Cavalera was quite hard to see from my point of view in the photo pit, but he hit those skins with so much power and aggression that there was no doubting that it was the legendary drummer behind the impressively large drum kit.
Max’s voice was so powerful, he commanded the stage with a stage presence that was all-encompassing. His grin as he looked through his long hair, over the bullet belt-laden microphone stand, and down to the crowd before him was that of a man who was clearly still loving what he does, and that showed in the performance. Before introducing “Anti Christ,” he took a moment to remind Newcastle that they were watching “the real Sepultura," and the crowd was lapping it up.
The whole band seemed to have boundless energy, with Iggor’s drums hitting hard and with such speed and precision that the whole band was like a well-oiled machine. Everything just worked.
Playing a good mix of songs, including "Crucifixion," “Empire of the Damned,” and “Funeral Rites," the fans were given a show that they hoped for. And of course, no Cavalera show would be complete without the holy grail of Sepultura tracks: Refuse / Resist and Territory, and the lads definitely didn’t disappoint.
An incredible display of metal prowess. No tapping here, just a full on, brutal full metal onslaught, and it was amazing.
