Live Review: Exploding Flowers Bring Intimate Power-Pop Magic to Cluny2, Newcastle
Supported by Glasgow’s Dancer and local post-punks Knitting Circle, the Los Angeles four-piece delivered a masterclass in synth-fuelled pop.

Los Angeles pop band Exploding Flowers recently rolled into Newcastle on their UK tour, taking over Cluny2—the subterranean gem tucked right into the heart of Ouseburn’s cultural hub. Bringing Glasgow’s Dancer and local support Knitting Circle along for the ride, the night promised a potent dose of sharp, energetic live music.

Knitting Circle kicked things off with their own unique style of post-punk that got the room well and truly loosened up. The trio are an interesting band with a lot to give, there wasn't any knitting going on but there was plenty of raw energy and edgy punk rock goodness.

Glasgow four-piece Dancer followed next, keeping the momentum going with a cracking performance. They seem like a band who understand what each other is thinking with just a look and the occasional laugh. That genuine sense of fun radiated off the stage and you could feel the good vibes in the room. They are a group to keep an eye on for sure.
Before I had a chance to blink, it was time for Exploding Flowers to take the stage. Frontman Sharif Dumani took to the mic and introduced the band: "We're Exploding Flowers from Los Angeles, California. And this show could have gone a number of ways. Just like anything really beautiful in life it takes a village, so thanks to all the bands, friends and family doing the door, and all the people showing up."
The four-piece then launched into a masterclass of bright, synth-fuelled power pop. What followed was an immersive performance that showcased their talent, a talent that would really not be out of place on a much larger stage. Their first outing in Newcastle was an intimate affair, as the band filled the room with their distinctive sound, they really gave it their all making for an unforgettable show which was actually made all the more special thanks to the size of the venue. Being able to get that connection between a band and the audience in such close quarters is something that is easily overlooked but can really make a show a next level experience.
Those lucky enough to be in attendance were treated to a wonderfully personal, top-tier performance. If you weren't there, you missed out on something rather special. Take a word to the wise: when Exploding Flowers inevitably make their way back to the UK, grab a ticket and get yourself along to a show. It is a unique show and one that you will feel all the better for having experienced first hand.
