It isn't every night that a Hollywood star rolls into the Toon, but legendary actor and musician Kiefer Sutherland paid a very welcome visit to the city on his Love Will Bring You Home tour, taking to the stage at the Boilershop, and intimate venue that is full of character.
The audience were in good spirits as the venue filled, many proudly wearing Kiefer t-shirts from previous tours, a clear sign that they weren't just there to catch a glimpse of Hollywood royalty, they were there for the music. There was a real buzz of excitement and anticipation about the place as people waited for the show to begin, a sure fired sign of a good night to come.
Support came courtesy of Irish singer Colin Andrew, who got the crowd well and truly warmed up. He played a rousing and engaging set. In a nod to the Newcastle crowd, Colin featured a Dire Straits cover, which went down an absolute storm, as you can probably imagine, this is, after all, Dire Straits' home turf. He also showed off his humorous side, telling the audience that he loves shows where he can see everyone in the crowd, before pausing to point into the crowd saying, "It also means I can see who's talking." A great voice, cracking tunes, and a charismatic stage presence to match. Keep an eye out for Colin Andrew, because his career looks set to go from strength to strength.

After a short break, it was time for the main event. Kiefer Sutherland who walked on stage to huge, massive cheers from the audience, he wasted no time launching into fan favourite 'Down the Line' which set the tone for what would prove to be an evening that didn't just live up to but exceeded my expectations and by the sound of the crowd, an show that will be ingrained on their memory for a long time to come.
The man himself cut an impressive figure on stage, dressed in a sharp suit and a wide brimmed hat that perfectly matched the aesthetic of his country music style. It is a strong look, and one that he definitely carries off with style. Taking a moment to thank the crowd for coming out on a Sunday night, Kiefer got right down to business with a set was a great mix of old and new material. Tracks like 'Goodbye California' drawing a particularly enthusiastic reaction from the crowd. It was really good to see the audience embracing the newer songs with just as much enthusiasm as the old favourites. Kiefer also managed to cram in a few covers and one highlight of the evening came in the form of a cover of Phil Collins' 'In the Air Tonight', that had a generous sprinkling of Kiefer magic added to it. Great stuff.

If you ever get the chance to see a Kiefer Sutherland gig, do not let it pass you by. He puts on a fantastic show, plays with real conviction, and genuinely seems to love every moment of what he does.
Kiefer's new album, 'Grey', is due for release on the 29th of May via Maple Creek Records, and if what we heard on Sunday night is anything to go by, it is an album well worth your time. You can preorder it here.
