LIVE REVIEW
LEVELLERS
NX NEWCASTLE
22ND JUNE 2024
Legendary folk rockers Levellers made a triumphant return to Newcastle with support from Lyon & Bird. As temperatures soared outside, those with the hottest ticket in town were in for a real treat. A refreshing blast of anarchic folk infused rock with real punk attitude.
It is no coincidence that Levellers have been around for decades, their fanbase is extremely loyal, and that was reflected in the amount of people who turned up to pack out NX in Newcastle.

The atmosphere was already positively charged before the openers, Lyon and Bird, made their way to the stage, and the duo, who normally play as part of a larger band, Holy Moly and The Crackers, added to that positive energy.
Vocalist and fiddle player, Ruth donned a floral headdress, which we were told was due to being on a hen party the day before and heading straight to the gig. Ruth swigged from a bottle of fizz before enchanting the audience with her stunning vocals. Conrad's charismatic smile as he played the guitar lit up the room. A powerful and captivating performance.

As Lyon and Bird left the stage, the crew worked quickly to get the venue ready for the headliners. The backdrop with the Levellers' iconic imagery lit up, and the air was filled with excited cheers from the crowd. The band walked on and got right down to business. Opening with a Nineteens classic 'Fifteen Years', the band were full of energy from the very start.
The band was as tight as ever, and the interaction between the different members made it clear they were having a great time. Bassist Jez's dreadlocks trailing right down past his knees created awesome patterns against the strong lighting as he moved around the stage. Charlie was on point with his tub thumping, giving a solid backbone to the band's performance.
Mark's distinctive voice was as strong as ever as the band gave the audience a solid set, including 'Sell Out' and 'Firebird' topping off the night with fan favourite 'Liberty Song'. It may be unsurprising that they are so good considering that they have been playing gigs for over thirty years, but it is no less impressive that they still bring raw, powerful energy to their live show.
Overall, a solid performance that gave everyone lucky enough to be there, memories to cherish.
