SHED SEVEN
NEWCASTLE CITY HALL - 29th NOVEMBER 2024
Renowned rockers Shed Seven have been an integral part of the British music scene since the 1990s. Their own unique style of alternative rock saw them rising to fame with their iconic debut album 'Change Giver', an album that gave us songs like 'Speakeasy' and, of course, 'Ocean Pie'. And now, 30 years later, Shed Seven has been touring the UK and Ireland, celebrating the release of their brand new album, 'Liquid Gold'. The band even had a beer at the bar called Liquid Gold.
We were excited to go along and check out their Newcastle show. The gig marked the halfway mark on the tour and was the band's biggest gig in the city to date. Joining them on this tour was Sheffield rock outfit The Sherlocks.
Opening up for a band as iconic as Shed Seven on a sold-out show in Newcastle must be a daunting task for any band, but The Sherlocks seemed to take it in their stride.
The four-piece gave a solid performance with plenty of energy and had the crowd jumping around and singing along. Great to see that the future of music is most definitely in safe hands with these lads. Their new album comes out in February 2025, so keep your eyes peeled for it.

Kicking off their set with 'Room In My House' and a spectacular performance of 'Speakeasy,' Shed Seven were not messing around. They sounded absolutely fantastic. As 'Speakeasy' closed, Rick broke the ice with the crowd and said, "Newcastle, we are finally in you!" The enigmatic frontman was in great spirits and took a break from singing to chat with the crowd about the fact that they are one of only 20 acts to have two number one albums in the charts in the same year, putting Shed Seven up in the same league as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Elton John, Abba, Queen, and Blue. Rick even said Duncan and he will 'Christmas together,' and they can talk about their two albums together, saying, "Well, he can listen when I talk about mine, and I will just pour another glass of wine when he starts talking about his."
Rick also took on the new name Rick Gritter, as he quipped that the local council had given him his own gritter and he will make sure everyone gets home safely if it snows.
Ice broken and joking done, the band took City Hall back to 1998 with an awesome rendition of 'Devil in You' with a live brass section adding that something extra special to the show. Shed Seven definitely connected with their audience and gave them a night to remember; they even brought a special guest along with them to give the toon a real treat. Legendary singer Rowetta of Happy Mondays fame, rocked out on 'In Ecstasy', 'F: K: H' and later on joined the band 'Disco Down'.
Shed Seven gave fans new and old everything they had, and the energy in the room was on another level from start to finish. You could see from people's faces that they were having a ball. With an extensive set featuring songs from across their three decades of incredible music.
Shed Seven showed us all why they have stood the test of time and that their music and ability to connect with their audience have seen them continue to go from strength to strength, and the sold-out show is a testament to that.
