London alt-rockers Sports Team have been on the road getting up close and personal with their fans. The 'Boys These Days' UK tour is a big one with 10 dates in cities from Manchester to London. We went along to their gig at Newcastle's Boiler Shop on night 6 of the tour.
Joining the party in the toon were Leeds-based Adult DVD and London-based trio Mary In The Junkyard. Up first, Adult DVD filled the room with synth-infused electronic pop sounds that gave the early birds who made the wise choice to get to the venue early a real audiological treat. They had a great energy about them, and they looked like they were having a good time; the audience definitely was.

Up next, Mary In The Junkyard had their moment in the spotlight, and they shone bright. With their unique, guitar-infused atmospheric rock sound, the trio gave a great performance. All three band members gave it their all and connected with the Tyneside crowd, helped in part by sharing that Newcastle has the world's largest GPM (Greggs per square mile), a fact which I for one take full advantage of whenever possible.
The Sports Team fans have been waiting a while for the band to come back to the city, having last played Newcastle in 2022 at RPM Music. All that energy was definitely put to good use throughout the gig. As the band walked on stage, the noise from the crowd was immense.
Frontman Alex, wearing huge shades, owned the stage from the start. His energy was infectious as he moved around the stage, stopping centre stage for an unusual dance before getting the crowd to go wild as he threw his towel into the depths of the pit.
They played a cracking set, kicking off with 'The Game' and ending with 'Here's the Thing.' In between those was a heady mix of audience interaction, with Alex getting deep into the crowd, being lifted over their heads at one point. There was even a human pyramid, something that not every gig can boast.
Alex had earlier on in the show said that Sam Fender was at the gig incognito; whether he was or not, I can't say, but if he was, I am sure he would have had a great time, as did everyone who was lucky enough to witness Alex, Oli, Al, Rob, Ben, and Henry rocking the socks off the toon.
