LIVE REVIEW
THE LIBERTINES
NEWCASTLE NX 05/11/24
The Libertines are one of the most iconic names in British indie rock music. From their first taste of fame back in the 1990s to the present day, The Libertines have lived and breathed the rock and roll life and have been no strangers to controversy.
With all that set to one side, The Libertines are undeniably one of the most influential bands around. Their era defining sound still resonates with their fans to this very day. They have taken to the road in recent months and we were lucky enough to go along to their Newcastle show.
The venue (NX Newcastle) was completely sold out for the return of the likely lads, and the fans were in for a real treat. The Libertines definitely made a night of it and invited not one but four opening acts along to join the party.

Frozemode
First up London based alt-rap group Frozemode exploded on to the stage with boundless energy. It honestly felt like they were playing to their own crowd and by the time they reached the end of the set it is safe to say that they had made a whole new set of fans in Newcastle. With their unique mix of metalesque guitar riffs and rap went down well and their innovative use of sound was a joy to hear.
Switching things up the second opening act Indy Punk singer Evan Williams guided the Newcastle audience down a totally different musical path with a stunning acoustic set. It was great fun seeing the stage crew getting to work on stage as Evan kept the crowd entertained, its a wonder that more bands don't do this.

Evan Williams
As the NX became more and more packed with gig goers, Newcastle based Bearpark played a blinder as they seranded the hometown crowd with heavy as you like guitar riffs and stunning drumwork. The vocals were impressive and hit all the right spots with the audience jumping around without a care in the world. It was an incredible performance from Shay, Guy and Adam.
Bearpark
Just when I thought you couldn't fit anymore variety in one concert, The Libertines were there to prove me wrong. Peter Doherty strode on stage with dog in tow to introduce his friend from the north east, Morag Butler who played an eclectic mix of songs. From a Bruce Springsteen cover to Geordie folk classic 'The Keel Row', Morag shone like a star with a charismatic smile and carefree style. A real northern gem.
It had been an epic evening so far and the party was only just getting started. As the Lindisfarne classic 'Fog on the Tyne' played over the PA and the house lights dimmed, you could feel the excitement in the room.
The stage was bedecked in red light and the image of The Albion Rooms filled the backdrop. It wasn't long before the band walked on to the NX boards to a wall of cheers from the crowd.
As they kicked off a night of their classics alongside a good dose of songs from their latest album All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade. There was no messing around as the lads got to business with a cracking rendition of The Delaney.
The band sounded like they were in good form and they all seemed to be bouncing off each other's chemistry. Peter and Carl sounded phenomenal showing why they are as popular today as they ever have been. The crowd was a decent mix of ages with fans young and old rocking out.
Being able to sell out venue after venue is testament to The Libertines pulling power thanks to their iconic songs that helped define an entire era. The Newcastle audience got behind their newer songs, with songs like Merry Old England going down a treat. It is hard to cram an entire life's work in to one show but The Libertines gave it a good go. With a huge 24 song setlist which they topped off with arguably their best know track 'Don't Look Back In To The Sun', The Libertines rocked the toon good and proper.
You can check out the band's latest album All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade at linktr.ee/thelibertines
They are also set to play 2 huge shows next year in Margate and Gunnersby Park along with huge names like Supergrass and Soft Play. Tickets go on sale on Friday 8th of November.
