LIVE REVIEW
THE PALE WHITE
NORTHUMBRIA STUDENTS UNION
NEWCASTLE
Photos and review: David Weddle
What an incredible weekend for Newcastle!!! Not only did The Magpies (Newcastle United) win the Carabao Cup, but the day prior saw The Pale White hit the stage at Northumbria Uni in a hometown show in the run-up to their new album, 'The Big Sad'.
Helping them entertain the crowd were two awesome acts also from the northeast, Ernie and Lizzie Esau. First up, Ernie (@erniethechef on Instagram) put on a fantastic show for those lucky enough to get to the venue early. The crowd loved it, with one lad shouting out, "Play that funky music," to which Ernie quipped, "That's Bruce, our warm-up guy!"
There was great energy throughout his set, which definitely peaked with 'Pink Headaches'. What a way to kick off the night.

As Ernie made way for Lizzie Esau, the room had filled up considerably, with the air still buzzing from Ernie's set. Lizzie walked on stage wearing a set of fairy wings to huge applause. It could be said that Lizzie is a rising star; however, the singer has been rocking out on the scene for quite some time now, and that shows as she makes the stage and her audience her own. A great set topped off with a stunning rendition of 'Bleak Sublime'. Lizzie Esau is playing at The Glasshouse on the 16th of April, so you can check out her live show for yourself.
As the crowd waited eagerly for The Pale White to do their thing, there was little wiggle room left, as Northumbria Uni had filled up nicely, and the atmosphere was one of anticipation and excitement. It felt like we were in for a treat, and indeed we were.

The lights dimmed, and Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' boomed from the PA system. That pent-up excitement was released in huge cheers from the crowd as The Pale White took their place in front of the hometown crowd. Kicking off on a high with 'That Dress', a proper banger that matched the fan's energy. They didn't waste that energy either, heading straight into 'How Far Can You Push A Man'.
The band was on fire at Northumbria Uni, and the crowd was well and truly hyped up. The gig was a display of pure rock n roll greatness from a band that has been going from strength to strength recently; their fanbase continues to grow, and that is not a fluke by any stretch of the imagination. Look at it this way: how often do you see the drummer crowd surfing? Exactly! This is a band that gives their fans 110% at their gigs, and the fans repay that ten times over; just ask the guy who shouted, "I love you guys!" right down my lug; he was as passionate about the band as it gets. Great stuff.
The Pale White release their brand new album, 'The Big Sad', on the 18th of April, and it promises to be a cracker.
