Marie Minet
Dis Papa
French singer songwriter Marie Minet has released a new single titled Dis Papa. It’s written as a farewell from a father to his children, approaching death as a journey rather than a final destination. That powerful subject matter comes across in the emotions that the music itself portrays and Marie's vocal work projects.
From a lyrical perspective the song is very direct and Marie doesn't dance around what is a very tough thing to deal with on a human level. The focus stays firmly fixed on what is left behind after someone has gone rather than the moment the person left, a very clever idea and one that is executed with real skill. The opening lines hit hard and prepares the way for a real emotional song, "My children, I write this poem to conclude, the beauty of a life that awakens and falls asleep".

Marie's voice feels unguarded, as if she is being entirely open and honest giving a vulnerability to the vocals that adds an extra emotional layer to the song. It doesn't feel like there was a lot of tweaking or playing around with the vocals after they were recorded which is good to hear.
Dis Papa fits perfectly into Marie Minet's current body of work Clair Obscur - High Life Edition which has seen her rework earlier work, taking inspiration from something Marie calls "a creative awakening in Ghana." That, combined with her classical roots blend together to create something quite special. If you like what you hear with Dis Papa then I would recommend checking out her 2021 album Clair Obscur as it will give you a greater understanding of Marie's musical journey so far.
