MARY SPENDER
The super sexy uk tour
In a world filled with instant gratification, thanks to our insatiable appetite for social media and quick fixes, it is refreshing to discover an artist who has taken their time to hone their craft and building an audience from scratch. That is exactly what Mary Spender has done.
You may recognise Mary from her successful YouTube channel dedicated to all things music. Whether that be breaking down classic songs, sharing her thoughts on the music industry, or interviewing prominent artists, Mary has proven herself to be a dynamic and prolific ambassador of a DIY mentality. Having amassed a huge audience of over 744k subscribers with over 93 million views, Mary doesn't just talk the talk; she very much walks the walk.
Mary’s talents know no bounds, and her songwriting ability led to her writing the John Mayer track ‘Last Train Home’. Mary released her debut EP back in 2019 and a live double album funded by Patreon fans, in 2023 Mary released her debut studio album, ‘Super. Sexy. Heartbreak.’ on CD and vinyl. Highlighting the meagre compensation received by artists from streaming services, Mary chose to prioritise the physical formats for the release of the album in a bid to try and recapture some of the value of music again.
Throughout 2024, Mary released the album on streaming platforms track by track, culminating in the full release of ‘Super. Sexy. Heartbreak.’ in July. Recorded in Barcelona with her producer Pau Romero, with Aaron Sterling on drums (John Mayer, Regina Spektor), Sean Hurley on bass (Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani), and a slide guitar contribution from modern-day guitar hero Ariel Posen on one track, it’s the record she’s always wanted to make.
