Taking a leap of faith into the music world as a solo artist is a daunting task for anybody, but it shows a real strength of character to take that leap from an already successful music career that has seen you play with the likes of Paul Weller as a key member of his band and touring the world. That is exactly what Andy Crofts has done with his stunning debut solo album, Melody Boy, and he has most definitely landed on his feet.
The new album marks a line in the sand for Andy, which is both metaphorical and physical, as he wrote and recorded the whole album in a tiny beach hut studio on the English coast. From the moment Melody Boy kicks off with lead single 'Blue,' Andy gives us a first glimpse of great things to come. Maybe that coastal atmosphere rubbed off on him, as the song gave me vibes of the classic 'Mr. Blue Sky' by ELO at times. The song is a fantastic opener and an excellent choice for a lead single, brimming with effortless charm and an incredibly catchy melody.
The emotionally charged 'Meet Again' takes us down a different path, revealing a vulnerable side to Andy through its heartfelt and soulful composition. The sentiment of the song is one that I am confident will resonate with most people. It is just one of many different sides to this album, which takes you on a musical journey that leaves you feeling better for having been on it; it is almost therapeutic at times.
Andy has learned a thing or two over his career, that's for sure, but you don't write songs like Living In A Box or the fully instrumental Midnight By The Thames without having real talent, and Andy has that in spades, that's for sure. If you had to push me for a highlight, I'd have to say I'm No Fool is a strong contender, with its Madness-esque instrumentation, but Save My Soul gave me chills and wouldn't have been out of place in a Tarantino film.
