Milkpunch is a Melbourne-based band that thrives on contrast, with dreamy yet gritty tones. Their debut album, MILKPUNCH, captures that duality across 11 straight-forward yet stylistically diverse tracks. Inspired by the eclecticism of The Beatles’ White Album, each song on MILKPUNCH has its own distinct sonic identity, while still holding together as a cohesive body of work that highlights the band’s broad scope.
MILKPUNCH blends gritty garage rock with glossy synths and pop hooks. A gang-of-four garage rock outfit crash-landing into a futuristic pop-scape - think Sex Bob-omb if they were envisioned by Jean Paul Gaultier and dropped into the neon chaos of The Fifth Element. With nods to The Voidz and Queens Of The Stone Age, the production stays raw but imaginative, pushing boundaries while keeping things catchy. Beatle-esque melodies run through the album, tying it all together with heart. The result is a bold, futuristic take on rock that still feels grounded and personal.
Written, recorded, and mixed entirely by front-person Raf Lima in his home studio, the album is more than a collection of songs: it’s the foundation of a larger vision and it sets the stage for Milkpunch as a full band, making the full transition from bedroom indie into something much more dynamic. The album isn’t just a way for Raf to voice his musical leanings, but also an opportunity for him to continually explore new ideas and sounds, always setting a high bar in terms of songwriting and production.
This album marks the beginning of a new exciting chapter for the band. The current line up features Kristjan Blade (synth/percussion), Oscar Russo (drums), and Kate O'Donnell (bass). Since forming, the band has been gigging across Australia, crafting a raw, infectious live show in preparation for a national tour early next year.
