REAL PERSON

New York-based electronic trio Occurrence return with a surprise release that sidesteps convention and dives straight into the heart of their most personal material to date. Titled Real Person, the band’s sixth full-length album arrives without fanfare, but with a quiet emotional gravity that makes its impact felt from the first note.

Made up of Ken Urban (electronics), Cat Hollyer (vocals), and Johnny Hager (vocals), Occurrence are no strangers to creative risks, but Real Person is a shift even for them. Less a traditional album and more a sonic journal, each track is inspired by a real person who has influenced the trio in some way, from renowned writers and artists to close friends and each other.

The project began during sessions for their previous album Real Friend. While crafting that record, Ken Urban began composing more experimental pieces that captured his emotional responses to people who left a mark on his life. One of those people was Cat Hollyer, who received a piece composed for her while she was recovering from COVID. “Ken texted me from the studio saying he was working on an ambient piece that he hoped would soothe me,” she says. “I didn’t know the rest of the world would ever hear it.”

The album also features a striking tribute to Wayne Feldman, built around a raw banjo recording which Ken bent into a pulsing techno track. Another standout is John Charles Hager, where actor Ryan Spahn reads a personal reflection written by Ken, offering an unguarded definition of love addressed to Johnny.

While Real Person might appear as a follow-up to Real Friend, the band is clear it exists in a different space. “This was our opportunity to reconnect with the more experimental side of Occurrence,” says Johnny. “It let us step away from structure and focus on the sound itself.”

From ambient swells to distorted textures, the album’s sound palette is wide and unpredictable, yet every piece remains tethered to something real, someone meaningful. It’s this blend of sonic experimentation and intimate storytelling that gives Real Person its emotional depth.

Mixed by Kiri Stensby and mastered by Jessica Thompson, Real Person is out now. Raw, reflective, and unmistakably human.
