Ratfink!
WHEN U WERE MINE

Words: Music News Monthly
Ratfink! has released WHEN U WERE MINE, a DIY record put together with basic equipment and a loose recording setup. The album was recorded using a low cost microphone, a budget guitar, and a laptop that has seen better days, after a drink was spilled on it during earlier sessions.

The release follows earlier singles About Ya, Gay Song and Plastic Bits, which laid out the approach used across the record. The songs are short, direct and built around simple arrangements. The focus stays on momentum rather than detail, with tracks often moving quickly from one idea to the next.

You can definitely hear the rock and roll influence that runs right through the album, not a stylistic statement or some sort of throwback but just good old rock and roll vibes. Many of the recording sessions took place late at night and were full of interruptions which is possibly one of the things that helped to shape the way the album came together, giving it a bit of an edge.

That edge is thanks in part to Ratfink!’s partner Liv, a regular presence during recording who would occasionally arrive mid session and shift the atmosphere. Those moments feed into the tone of the album in subtle ways, adding contrast without changing direction.

WHEN U WERE MINE documents a period of writing and recording without trying to reframe it. It is available to check out right now, so be sure to give WHEN U WERE MINE a spin.
