Birmingham indie-rockers The Clause have today made a powerful statement of intent for their future with the news that their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Victim of a Casual Thing’ has fired straight in at #8 on the Official Album Chart’s midweeks. Standing just one spot behind the new record from global star Sigrid, it means that The Clause have every chance of achieving a remarkable Top 10 hit when the final charts are revealed this Friday - and in the process proving that the future can be bright for the new wave of entirely independent rock ‘n’ roll bands.
What’s more, The Clause’s breakthrough moment is also a triumph for the old school values of friendship and dogged determination. The band started in a dingy school practice room in 2011, where Pearce Macca (vocals/guitar), Jonny Fyffe (bass) and Niall Fennell (drums) would jam to their favourite songs and experiment with writing their own before Liam Deakin (guitar) subsequently completed the line-up. From those modest roots, they put in the hours and the effort to establish a band who have long been destined for bigger things.

From those modest roots, they put in the hours and the effort to establish a band who have long been destined for bigger things.
Since then, the four friends have shared two parallel journeys: overcoming the many challenges and setbacks of being an aspiring band to ignite crowds at festivals such as Radio 1’s Big Weekend, The Isle Wight, Truck, Tramlines and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus; and the dreams, heartaches, sadness and triumphs that all groups of friends share through their teen years and into young adulthood. And it is those stories will infuse ‘Victim of a Casual Thing’ with the relatability and passion to match the band’s energy and songcraft.
The album campaign has been full of unforgettable moments in recent weeks, including a rammed, celebratory album launch show at the Hare & Hounds in Birmingham; high profile promo moments with Radio X and talkSPORT; selling all 500 copies of a special Blood Records album vinyl in just an hour; a record store tour with an emotional moment when Pearce was surprised by a visit from his grandmother in Glasgow; and even the opportunity to present one of the first copies of the record to one of their key influences, Serge Pizzorno of Kasabian.
The Clause commented, “WE’RE NUMBER 8 IN THE OFFICIAL MID WEEK CHARTS!
Against all the odds, our little band from Birmingham are battling the giants in the Official Charts. We’re doing this completely on our own; no label and no big management team.
This is bigger than us now. We’re the only independent artist inside the top 10, we’re fighting with all the major labels and artists. If you haven’t got your copy of the album, go get it now and let’s try to keep it up there!
Love you all, UP THE CLAUSE x”
