The Slates started their new deal with This Feeling Records / LAB Records in style with ‘Watch It Burn’. Greeted with a wave of support across Apple Music, Radio X, Amazing Radio and Northern Exposure, the band followed the track with a sold-out UK headline tour and electrifying festival sets including This Feeling By The Sea and The Great Escape. Now the youthful Yorkshire quartet shift gears on that soaring momentum with the new single ‘Try It Again’.
The Slates have proven their ability to deliver instantly insistent indie-pop anthems with the likes of ‘What Have You Done?’ and ‘Calling Up’ but ‘Try It Again’ shows the growing diversity and maturity of their style. It’s an emotionally affecting piano-led ballad which puts guitarist Joe Briggs’ vulnerable lyricism and Louis Barnes’ tender, accomplished vocal in the spotlight before culminating with an uplifting finale. It’s a song that can connect with fans who have experienced similarly tumultuous feelings as blossoming relationships fade into burning embers.
The single has already earned a big reaction when debuted at recent live shows, prompting wall-to-wall singalongs for this at the time unreleased song. ‘Try It Again’ was written by Louis Barnes and Joe Briggs. It was produced by Mike Heaton and Tom Butler, with mixing and mastering from James Kinosha.
Joe Briggs says, “‘Try It Again’ is about a subconscious feeling I had whilst being in a past relationship. I knew that it was coming to an end, but I was hiding away from the truth and wanting to try it again.”
‘Try It Again’ also features on the band’s limited edition vinyl-only singles compilation ‘From Then Till Now’. Final copies of the record are available HERE.
Completed by founder member Jude Wales (bass) and recent recruit Cohen Hall (drums), The Slates’ ascendency is replicated in the live arena following shows with contemporaries such as The Clause, The Lilacs, Crystal Tides and The Kairos as well as longstanding indie favourites like Embrace.
That continues into the summer, with a festival schedule that includes headlining stages at the Isle of Wight and Y NOT? while also taking in Truck, Tramlines, 110 Above and more, plus their first ever show in Spain at Polifonik Sound. They also recently announced details of their biggest headline tour so far at Leeds Beckett Student Union, remaining tickets for which are available HERE.
