The Yacht Club
The Greatest Misadventure (Anniversary Edition)

If you have spent any time tracking the UK math rock scene lately, you already know that it is a scene that needs more than just a catchy hook to get noticed. It demands surgical, high stakes precision. Luckily that is something that The Yacht Club have become known for and take great pride in. They are looking to the future with a new album just over the horizon, but first, they have taken a look back to a previous release The Greatest Misadventure (Anniversary Edition), and celebrating it with a total rebuild of the song.

Not content with re-releasing the track, The Yacht Club have stripped the song right back to it's bare bones and rebuilt it with a level of technical density that would make a metronome break a sweat. The four piece, who hail from Norwich and London have a love of Math infused, Midwest Emo and this track really ticks all of those boxes. This "Misadventure"  is a masterclass in the kind of polyrhythmic phrasing and intricate fingerstyle interplay that usually stays locked in a practice room, luckily for us The Yacht Club have taken that outside of the practice room in this glorious release.
Yes, they are looking back on a song that they forgot how to play but what they have presented is something that sounds fresh and clean with a strong lean towards the virtuosic guitar bands of the day. I'd say that The Yacht Club have managed to reimagine while staying true to it's roots. Having listened to both versions, it is clear that the focus on the guitar work in particular has give The Greatest Misadventure a real level up.

If this single is the blueprint, the upcoming record is going to be essential listening for anyone who values the "math" as much as the "rock." It was already a great song that has been taken to the next level by a band who really know what they are doing and sound like they are loving composing and playing it as much as I did listening to it.

Check it out right now and keep an ear to the ground for the new album coming soon.
