Tillerman
Summer of '96

Picture
Tillerman have released a new single called 'Summer of ’96'. The band wanted to look back at a moment in British culture when football, TV, and guitar bands were part of day-to-day life. Anyone who remembers that period will recognise bits of it straight away. The group itself was formed in 2019 by brothers Jon and Tom Kulczycki, and they have spent most of their time focusing on writing and recorded work rather than trying to build a heavy touring schedule. They have always said the aim is to make songs that stand up on their own, which explains the amount of time they put into the production and the video side of things.

Their influences cover a long list of well known acts, including The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Mamas and the Papas, Bryan Adams, and a plethora of British bands from the 60s through to the 90s. You can hear a bit of that in the new track. Instead of reshaping the sound into something overly modern, they have kept the parts they like from the BritPop period and the wider pop-rock that was around at the time.

The references to Euro ’96 and the TV shows people grew up with are direct but not overplayed, and the track sticks to its main idea without drifting around keeping it straight forward and easy to listen to. At the centre of the song is a straightforward young-love story. It is written in a general way so it doesn’t rely on personal details, which makes it easy to follow. The main line, “You spent the Summer of ’96 with me,” repeats as the key point and keeps everything tied together.

With 'Summer of ’96', Tillerman continue the approach they have had since forming. They pull from the music they grew up listening to and shape it into something that suits them now. It is a clear, accessible single that reflects their influences and gives a good indication of where they want to take future releases.
