"To the uninitiated, it may have looked like 50,000 people at a festival. But to those standing in Victoria Park that night, it felt like home."
Red and yellow tape, daubed black paint, skeleton hoodies, masks with cat ears? To the uninitiated it may sound like a fever dream, but to Twenty One Pilot fans, it sounds like home. The duo brought a close to this year's All Points East in spectacular fashion with 50,000 fans flooding Victoria Park like one, rather large, extended family.
The hype around this show was more than normal - it was announced a few weeks prior to the event that it was going to be an extended 2 hour 15 minute set. Not only that, but it was also being recorded for release! Mark Eshleman, the lead of the duo's creative direction, even auditioned fans to have them record footage of their journey to the festival, and what the band means to them. He has also confirmed that it is already in post production, scheduled for release this year. Yeah, all that for a normal festival headline set? I don't think so! And man, did they deliver!

The set opened with an extended intro version of ‘Overcompensate’ - punchy, powerful and of course, the iconic piano jump from frontman Tyler Joseph! An explosive start to the set, followed by the lead single from their latest album Breach - The Contract. What started off calm on a piano, quickly turned into Tyler standing atop of the crowd, swinging his microphone around and giving an impassioned performance while fans held him up on a platform. Returning to stage, his energy is maintained, before falling to his knees at the end of the song to remove his Clancy mask, greeting the crowd with a smile. I’ve seen these guys three times now, but this performance in particular seemed the happiest I've seen them. Genuinely seemed full of joy for this show.
Fan favourites followed with the likes of Shy Away, Heathens and Next Semester before reaching one of a handful of covers of the night. Milky Chances’ Stolen Dance, but it’s what followed this where it became clear this was going to be a special show - the live debut of Robot Voices! In an extended intro, Tyler thanked all the acts who played that day (yes, he really listed off every one!) before saying he missed one off, and to give their new friend a warm welcome to the stage, Emi Grace! Emi joined the guys on stage to play guitar during this special moment. She also joins the duo at their hometown stadium show in Ohio, opening the night for them. Making this moment a little more special, the first verse and chorus turned into Let It Be by The Beatles!
As silence falls on the crowd as the lights dim - the extended intro of Routines In The Night starts playing, which can only mean one thing - it’s time for the B stage! Drummer Josh Dun makes his way to a very special B stage, one that was never meant for the UK! The burning car from their music video Heavydirtysoul! Tyler soon follows suit, singing Routines In The Night on his way there, interacting with fans on his route.
Here we get treated to a fantastic medley of older songs - Message Man which involved the ritual of Tyler smearing black paint all over himself! Pet Cheetah and also Polarize. All while the car is on constant fire with occasional explosions! A true spectacle. Tyler then transitions his way back to the mainstage with Chlorine and stops off on the way to sing the last verse with a group of fans dressed as Ned - a character from the Twenty One Pilots universe. This band really does it like no one else when it comes to fan interaction. They spend just as much time with the fans as they do on stage!
Josh now makes his way back to the main stage holding a giant flag that reads ‘LONDON’. Throughout the day, fans had been signing the flag within a fan activation zone which featured the bands ‘Bandito Camp’ - a spot where fans can gather, cover each other in tape, play acoustic instruments, and just share their passion about the band with likeminded fans. A real community feel which showed just how special this band is to people.

Josh places the flag over his kick-drum - and the backdrop to the stage is now a burning ‘Dema’ - a city within the story the band tells - and the production really starts to ramp up here. We’re treated to an insane amount of pyro for Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners and Heavydirtysoul - a particular heavy section of the setlist and one of my favourites.
Drum Show follows and you guessed it, boy does Josh put on a drum show. He leaves the main stage once again, this time to climb a tower that’s adjacent to it. Tyler covers Radiohead's Creep while Josh is climbing. We get a classic Josh solo and an iconic Tyler scream all in one song. He stays up there for RAWFEAR which then sees Tyler once again leave the stage to interact with fans and, again, stands on top of fans at the barrier!
The rain starts as Drag Path is played, an already emotional song made even more so by the weather! Then during Ride, Tyler pulls a security guard, Lucas, on stage to help him sing the final chorus! (Lucas you killed it!)
Their rendition of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes is then played, which they originally covered at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, rounding off their covers for the night.
Towards the back end of the set, we also got Downstairs! A fan favourite from their latest album and a track none of us were expecting. This was a really special moment in the set and probably the loudest I heard the crowd. The song clearly means a lot to the fans.
Now the finale. The extended intro of Stressed Out and also the rock outro with a healthy dose of pyro! Followed by long-time final song, Trees. They ask if we have one more in us, and ask us to give them everything, and London does not let them down. They make their way to the barrier to play the outro on drums atop the crowd. Always an emotional end to the set.
This wasn’t just the final day of an epic festival in London - this was a family gathering. A celebration of music, memories, friendship, and a band that has become so much more than just a band to the people standing before them. To the uninitiated, it may have looked like 50,000 people watching a band at a festival. But to those standing in Victoria Park that night, it felt like home.
