Four Lemmas

Nigerian-born artist UDEiGWE, now based in New York, has recently released his brand new contemporary jazz record, Four Lemmas. It is a beautifully constructed concept album that blends spoken word elements with a modern jazz composition, creating an album that is joy to listen to. 

The eight track project is inspired by mathematical ideas from orthogonality, sparsity and equilibrium, using them as a framework for UDEiGWE to explore some very complex subjects including identity, emotional balance as well as ambition and personal reflection. 

There is a real depth and warmth to the album thanks to the care that UDEiGWE has taken to allow each instrument to shine, whether it is the piano, the warm tone of the trumpet or the bassline, they all compliment each other perfectly. UDEiGWE handled the composition as well as vocals, piano and arrangements while Steph Clement, Wayne Tucker, Josh Green and Rade Bema all contributed to project with their skills on trumpet, drums and bass. 

Not only an accomplished musician and storyteller, UDEiGWE is also a Professor of Mathematics at Manhattan University and a research affiliate in cognitive and brain sciences at MIT. He truly is a man of many talents and he has combined those skills to create an album that is memorable for all of the right reasons. Not just an artistic outlet, Four Lemmas is a masterclass in contemporary jazz.
