VONA VELLA
‘DRIVING TO L.A.’

STREAM “DRIVING TO L.A.”
“A dreamy and really great arrangement, all lovely and melancholic with those beautiful harmonies” Chris Hawkins, BBC Radio 6
Emerging Leicestershire duo Vona Vella make their mark with their vibrant new single “Driving to L.A.” – taken from their forthcoming debut EP under Peter Doherty’s label Strap Originals.
As the first brand-new artist to be releasing via the highly coveted Strap Originals roster, “Driving to L.A.” serves as an exceptional and important introduction for the duo. A warm-sounding number with a poignant twist, “Driving to L.A.” introduces the duo’s nostalgic, indulgent indie sound to audiences with unforgettable hooks and escapist lyrics – materialising as a shining example of Vona Vella’s distinctive fusion of retro-future vibes.
Directed by the iconic Roger Sargent, the colourful ‘60’s themed video brings their lyrics and personality to the fore, in a classic and stylish manner; Roger also photographed Vona Vella in his signature fashion, which sees them joining Sargent’s illustrious portfolio of music icons including The Libertines, Oasis, Kings of Leon, Kasabian, Damon Albarn and U2.
Co-writing and playing on all their songs, “Driving to L.A.” was produced by Mike Moore (Baxter Dury, Liam Gallagher), recorded at The Albion Rooms in Margate and mastered at Abbey Road Studios.
Vona Vella share the following insights into the song: “Driving to L.A.” is a very innocent love song about fleeing off to somewhere desirable, as a way to ignore facing relationship problems. It’s about knowing there's a chance someone is losing interest, but liking them too much to care.
Meanwhile, Peter Doherty said this of the band and “Driving to L.A.”: Gorgeous, beautiful song... lovely melody… quite optimistic, an escape song. I hope it lands well and people appreciate it.
Vona Vella is comprised of twenty-year-old singer, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Izzy Davis and Dan Cunningham. The band officially formed in Autumn 2020, after Ross Godfrey from the band Morcheeba heard their (then-unreleased) single “Sun” and decided to remix it. Izzy and Dan rushed to the closest studio to get the song recorded and, in the process, they created their band name: We were flicking through a flower encyclopaedia and found 'Vona'; we experimented with lots of words and landed on Vona Vella. Finding the band name was all quite a rush, as we were originally called Izzy and Dan which was very boring. It's pronounced Vona like 'Donna' but with a V.
Morcheeba’s remix of “Sun” proved an instant viral hit, racking up 800K+ streams and eventually landing at the ears of none other than Peter Doherty; Peter immediately fell in love with their glorious harmonising vocals and signed them up to his own label Strap Originals.
Despite still being in the early stages of life as Vona Vella, Izzy and Dan are heavily involved in all aspects of the band and possess a clear artistic vision of who and what Vona Vella is.
With Vona Vella already achieving significant co-signs from important industry figures recognising the duo’s potential, it’s clear that the alluring Izzy and Dan are already on to a winning formula – expect big things from Vona Vella and plenty more in the pipeline.
