WAR
‘The World Is A Ghetto’ 50th anniversary reissue
via Rhino/Warner Music
It has been just over 50 years since arguably one of America’s most influential and experimental soul-funk bands, WAR, released The World Is A Ghetto, an album that was Billboard’s best-selling album in 1973. WAR celebrated the occasion by releasing a special 5-LP boxset for Record Store Day.
WAR are set to release a 4-CD boxset via Rhino/Warner Music on the 19th of July, and as well as featuring the recently remastered original album, the boxset also includes six bonus tracks and a very special “the making of” recordings. The band is also releasing their Greatest Hits album, which includes some of the band’s best known work, notably ‘Low Rider’ and ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends’.
The band’s music has influenced many big names in the music industry, with samples of their tracks being used by none other than Janet Jackson, A$AP Mob, Geto Boys, and a hip-hop supergroup that featured Method Man, Red Man, Cypress Hill, and more. With their influence reaching across the generations and helping to shape the sound of music to this very day.

Over sixty years since their inception, WAR are still just as musically strong today as they were all those years ago. Having recently played their first UK show for 16 years, which received glowing reviews from the likes of The Telegraph, who said, "Thrilling groundbreaking 70s US funk rock troupe [got] the crowd dancing in the aisles… This is a band with real rock history… Their incredible playing, infectious enthusiasm and sinuous grooves proved irresistible.” WAR have also been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for 2025, something that is well deserved and recognises the band’s musical and cultural influences.
The re-issue and Greatest Hits album are a real celebration of some of their finest work, and the addition of the “The Making Of” recordings on The World Is A Ghetto (50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition), gives an extra insight into WAR’s recording process and band dynamics.
