West Wickhams
Sakura

Picture
West Wickhams have returned with Sakura, a new EP released with a limited physical edition through their Bandcamp page. The group have kept things simple and personal, offering a CD with a custom obi strip and a bundle of items for early buyers. These extras vary from mugs and tote bags to signed postcards and badges.

'Sakura' is a five track EP with a tracks “Up to the Old Tricks,” “Ice Block,” “As the Camera Shuts,” “EQ The Viper,” and “Save Yourselves.”. The overall sound is very much on par with their usual mix of lo-fi post-punk and bedroom-built synth ideas, with an edge of the darker side of alternative pop. A video has been released for the opening track, and the full EP is available on the major platforms for those who prefer streaming over physical media.
West Wickhams chose the title of the EP, 'Sakura' linking the project to the Japanese concept of mono no aware. It reflects an awareness of the fleeting nature of moments in time, how short lived things can leave a clear and lasting impression. That theme has helped to shape the presentation style, keeping the artwork consistent and fits in well with the tone that runs throughout the EP.

West Wickhams are Jon Othello and Elle Flores. They were raised on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, a place known for its distance from the mainland and its mixture of coastal history and unusual plant life. They now work out of Richmond in Surrey. Their influences range from Gothic literature and early horror writing to optical art, early punk circles, and the general mood found in darker pop-leaning projects. The pair also use the idea of being a parallel group to the Bromley Contingent as a loose guide for their visual identity.

* Sakura* continues their preference for minimal electronics and a DIY approach to production. It adds another short chapter to a catalogue, one that will resonate with many and is a worthy addition to any collection.
