May Day bank holiday at Leazes Park, Newcastle was a celebration of music including big names like Tom Grennan playing to the Geordie masses. On Sunday, the venue was set to play host to headline act Rag n Bone man, and despite the ground being very wet and muddy, revellers were in incredibly good spirits.
The afternoon was very special, showing off incredible north east talent, and kicking off proceedings Middlesbrough singer songwriter Finn Forster made his way to the stage. Opening any festival is a daunting task but Finn and his band didn’t show any signs of nerves as they belted out song after song, drawing in more and more people as the set progressed.
Finn’s vocals were on point and his incredibly powerful voice was a joy to hear and those who were there early enough to catch him perform were rewarded generously for their punctuality. Finn is most definitely a one to watch for the future.

Speaking of North East talent, there are few names more deeply entrenched in the north east music scene than that of North Shields son, Liam Fender. Liam’s fans were very vocal indeed as he and his band made their way on stage. The crowd had grown quite significantly and they were very ready to rock out with Liam.
Donning shades and hat, Liam played a selection of his best known songs including ‘Love Will Conquer’ and you could tell that the crowd were loving it. With his charismatic smile and cheeky banter, Liam connected with his audience with ease and it felt very much like he was enjoying himself. His band were on top form as well, from cello to guitar each member bounced off each other like a well oiled machine. These lads obviously take their music very seriously, and it shows in the quality of their performance.
As well as playing his own music, Liam took the crowd back to the eighties with a stunning rendition of Joy Division’s ‘Love will Tear Us Apart’. I can honestly say that Liam’s set was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. You can catch Liam live as he plays with a full Gospel choir at Newcastle’s Boiler Shop on 17th of May, a night that promises to be very special and if Sunday’s show is anything to go by, it is definitely not to be missed.
