The mercury was rising on the streets of Newcastle on a seemingly quiet sunny Saturday. People hurried around the shops and eateries of this northern powerhouse of a city. As they went about their business the people of Newcastle were totally oblivious to the fact that another northern powerhouse was about to blast the lugs off shoppers at the Newcastle branch of HMV.
The renowned music store hosts Live & Local sessions in their high street stores across the UK, giving a platform to local talent. Many acts both big and small have taken the opportunity to perform to local audiences and today was the turn of Newcastle hard rockers Crowley.
The five piece have built a loyal following over recent years with their own brand of hard rock with a pagan edge. They have opened up for the likes of Fury, The Cruel Knives, Green Lung as well as numerous festivals and headline shows that have helped them build their own enthusiastic audience. That fanbase showed their loyalty by filling out the first floor of HMV with plenty of Crowley t-shirt clad devotees looking forward to seeing the band perform a free set.
The sun had made the city centre store feel like in the inside of an oven and Crowley added to that feeling by melting the faces off of the audience with a powerful vocal performance from singer Lydia Balaban who didn't let the size of the venue hold her vocals back.
Time may have been short but Crowley filled every second with enough hard and heavy rock to satisfy even the most ardent fan. Guitarist Eliza Lee gave an epic performance backed up by Ruth Cranston on rhythm guitar, a formidable team. Bassist Kimberley Waugh put on an equally cracking show with crunching bass lines that added real depth to the gig. Crowley's unique sound was underpinned by Matthew Graham, an incredible drummer whose tub thumping is full of energy and power that really got the adrenaline pumping.
The band may not normally play in the daytime, as acknowledged at the start of the show by Lydia who told the crowd that they sound better in the cold and dark, however they sounded incredible and that was evident as they finished their last track of the day to the audience chanting 'More! More! More! More!'.
A cracking band and definitely a one to watch out for. Do yourself a favour and check them out at here: linktr.ee/crowley_uk
