‘A CALL TO THE VOID’
Reviewer: David Weddle
Rising pop-rock band Hot Milk have just released their long-awaited and highly anticipated debut album, 'A Call To The Void'. Having spent much of the last five years building a loyal following thanks in part to their three previously released EPs, the Manchester-based band has gone from strength to strength and has created a musical style of their own that is uniquely and instantly recognisable as the Hot Milk sound.
The album gets off to a strong start with a short intro track, 'Welcome to the...', that builds the atmosphere and the anticipation of what is to come. 'Horror Show', one of three singles taken from the album, is electro-pop punk at its finest. Something that Hot Milk has become renowned for. A strong start indeed.
Another single release, 'Bloodstream', showcases the band's ability to write and perform anthemic tracks that are bound to be sure-fire crowd pleasers. Getting heavier as we dive deeper into the album, 'Party on My Deathbed' talks of hedonistic tendencies, and the tune is so catchy that it plays right into the party mindset. Who wants the party to end, right? Live life to the fullest is the message I got from this song, and I'm all in.
Having started with their singles, you might think that the rest of the album is going to be mainly filler, but you would be wrong.......very wrong. The band has not skimped on quality with this album, not just musically but also lyrically. In fact, one of my favourite lines from a song in recent memory is: "You think you walk on water, but it's just piss all over your shoes. can be found in the song 'Over Your Dead Body'. A heavy as you like song with lyrics that are as sharp and cutting as a razor.
Hot Milk certainly seems to be the band that can do it all. Pop, punk, rock, and even metal-esque vocal screams at times. They effortlessly blend different genres together to create one coherent sound that I could listen to all day. There isn't a dull moment; even after the heavier tracks like 'Migraine', the journey into the void that Hot Milk takes you on continues on to a more pop rock feel in 'Breathing Underwater', and the hard-hitting 'Amphetamine' into the closing track 'Forget Me Not'. A stunning song that ends the album with heart-breaking lyrics that get the emotions going.
'A Call To The Void' is a well-thought-out album that takes the mind on a journey through so many emotions without getting cheesy or overbearing. Hot Milk has created something to be proud of and something that I am confident people will love listening to.
