NEWDAD
'MADRA'
Irish band NewDad have been around for a good few years now, formed in 2018 in Galway Ireland, the band have released several singles and an EP and have been seen on the bill for some of the most prestigious festivals in the UK and Europe.
Now, in 2024 the band are poised to release their debut album 'Madra' which means 'dog' when translated from Irish.
Listening to the album for the first time, I didn't know what to expect and was met with a sound that was both new and comfortingly familiar. The album is a masterpiece, starting off strong with a glorious bass line that put me immediately in mind of Nirvana, something that I felt throughout the album in songs like opener 'Angel' and later on in 'Let Go'.
Set against a grungy, indie rock vibe the laidback vocals are a stunning contrast that definitely makes for an interesting listen.

There are some really nice elements to 'Sickly Sweet', the chorus is lush and there are times where I think they are about to burst in to 'Pretend That We're Dead' by L7, I don't know if it was intentional or not but I certainly enjoyed it. There is a lot of energy throughout the album but the overiding feeling is one of being super chilled. 'In My Head' is a prime example of this, not only is there a lot going on in terms of the awesome drum work which definitely has an up-tempo feel, the song still feels somewhat laid back. It's pretty skilfully done.
As a debut album, NewDad have given us all a real treat. The effort that has gone in to creating an album that showcases the best of the band so far is evident. A confident, well crafted and expertly executed collection of songs that deserve a place in your collection.
