Rock legend and guitar icon Slash from Guns n' Roses and his friends Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators have been touring the world recently promoting their brand new album ‘The River is Rising’, and we were lucky enough to catch them on their second UK date in Newcastle, where they were joined by rock band Mammoth WVH. A band with real rock heritage, fronted by Wolfgang Van Halen.
Mammoth WVH kicked off their show with a six-song set, which might sound short, but I will say that just because it was short doesn't mean it wasn't good; it was six songs, and those songs absolutely rocked the place. Newcastle City Hall was sold out, and everybody was there pretty much that I could see. The stalls were crammed, and the balconies were packed out, and for a support band to be able to draw in that many people, you know that there's something special there.

Wolfgang was very charismatic and had a grin across his face a lot of the time. His voice was powerful, his guitar playing was impeccable, and his band members were just so full of energy and having a really good time. You could tell that they enjoyed what they were doing, and the crowd loved every single moment of their set. The cheers from the crowd were amazingly loud. I don't think there was anybody in that room who didn't feel that they were watching a headline act rather than an opening band. I thoroughly recommend checking Mammoth WVH out.
After a quick turnaround on stage, it was soon time for the headliners to take to the stage.
To chants of “Slash, Slash, Slash," the band bounded on to the stage and kicked off a very exciting and actually really long set. The first song up was ‘The River Is Rising’, the new album’s namesake. It was a stunning rendition.
Donning his signature top hat and shades, Slash was every bit the rock icon that you would have hoped for. His guitar playing was on point; he didn't miss a stroke. Myles Kennedy was all over the stage; his voice was amazing, and just like Wolfgang Van Halen, he had a huge smile, and you could see in his eyes that he was loving every moment of the show. He was connecting with the crowd with plenty of eye contact and energy—everything that you'd want from a rock star.
It was an amazing show there, with a massive set of 22 songs in total, with one or two in there that you might not expect, including a rendition of the Elton John hit ‘Rocket Man’ during the encore.
Bassist Todd Kerns took to the mic for a total of three songs, including the Lenny Kravitz hit ‘Always On The Run’, Guns n Roses song ‘Don’t Damn Me’, and ‘Doctor Alibi’. The Newcastle fans got a little bit of everything in this truly spectacular show. When a band like The Conspirators and a frontman like Myles take to the stage, you know that you are about to be rocked, and Newcastle rocked hard. Slash is very much at the top of his game; he knows exactly what the fans want and gave the rockers of Newcastle a night that they will be sure to remember for all the right reasons.
If you haven't heard the album, I recommend checking out right now, as you are definitely missing out.
