STILL CORNERS
DREAM TALK
Anglo-American duo Still Corners return with their sixth studio album, ‘Dream Talk’. For the last fifteen years, Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes have been creating their own brand of psychedelic ‘dream pop’, and with five full-length albums already in the bag, Still Corners have finely honed their sound, and that is reflected in their new album.
The album starts with the latest single, ‘Today Is The Day’,
Tessa Murray says, “You have all sorts of connections with songs you write, but some seem to connect on a deeper level for whatever reason, and this song does that for us. I think there were two sides to this song. One is that we wanted to say something about seizing the moment, as life is precious and tomorrow is not promised, and that is echoed in the chorus, Today is the Day, etc. On the other side, there's this connection to nature, and that's peppered throughout the lyrics as well. Yeats once said, "The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper." I really believe that, and when we were out filming this video by all the trees and birds and just hearing that acoustic guitar out there, it felt ancient and old, and it was something I had to be reminded of sitting there by the brook. I thought maybe I'll be lucky and catch a glimpse of something deeper.”
And that connection with the listener is strong; the gloriously subtle tones of the guitar lend a nostalgic sound to the song, which blends seamlessly with soothing vocals. There is a very positive vibe to the 'Today Is The Day', which is a great way to start the album. Upping the tempo slightly with a cleaner sound, track two, ‘The Dream’, has a luscious bassline that draws the ear in to the track. Once you’ve been drawn in, let yourself relax in the stunning soundscape that Still Corners has created for you.

The entire album is more of an immersive experience than just a record. From the opening track to the last note on the album, the incredible guitar work of Greg Hughes is prevalent and strong throughout, with a notable solo in ‘Lose More Slowly’, which is a beautiful piece. The haunting vocals of Tessa and wonderfully layered instrumentals make for a song that is captivating and definitely one that I will be eager to listen to again. It’s kind of addictive.
If you are looking for something to give your mind a break and submerge you in a world of enchanting vocals and soothing music that washes over and refreshes you like a bright blue wave on a sun-soaked beach, then this is the album for you. ‘Dream Talk’ is reset for the stressed-out minds of the modern world. Let Tessa and Greg take you on a journey through your own mind as they paint pictures in your imagination with their music. The album is more of an experience than anything else, and an experience that I, for one, will be more than happy to have again.
‘Dream Talk’ is out everywhere from 5th of April.
