KURT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS
NEWCASTLE BOILER SHOP
20/06/23
When an artist calls their debut solo album "Constant Hitmaker" it is easy to mistake the title as pretentious, but in the case of Kurt Vile, it appears that his debut album was more prophetic than pretentious. 16ish years later, Kurt has been a prolific songwriter who has constantly released stunning hit after stunning hit.
Now with a back catalogue that would make any artist green with envy, Kurt has taken to the road with his band The Violators, touring the world following the release of his 2022 album "(watch my moves)".
The show stopped off at Newcastle's Boiler Shop, which is where we encountered our first Kurt Vile show. Wow, what a show it was. Supporting Kurt on the UK leg of his tour was King Hannah, a rock duo from Liverpool who have built a large following since their inception in 2017. There was plenty of support for them in the Boiler Shop, with plenty of well-worn King Hannah tees dotted throughout the crowd.
They played a short but very entertaining set that went down a treat with the audience.
It's not easy to curate a decent set for a support slot, but King Hannah obviously knows how to put a great show together, and it showed. After thanking everyone for coming out early to see them, they left the stage to make way for the main event.

Kurt Vile and The Violators made their way on stage to huge cheers from the crowd. After a quick mic check, Kurt picked up his guitar and kicked off what would prove to be a night to remember. Starting with "Palace of OKV in Reverse", Kurt was in fine voice, and the atmosphere in front of the stage was full of positive energy.
The crowd was lapping it up, and Kurt was more than happy to give them what they wanted with "Loading Zones" before switching from his electric guitar to the old faithful acoustic guitar for "Bassackwards". It isn't every day that you can say that you witnessed greatness, but Kurt's performance of that song certainly felt that way.

The entire performance was outstanding, and the audience was in for an extra treat. Kurt played "Blackberry Song" for the Newcastle fans, a song that so far hasn't appeared on the setlist in other venues in the UK.
There is little doubt that Kurt Vile has left the people of Newcastle a little better off than when he arrived. The people who were lucky enough to be there definitely went away having experienced something special.
