LIAM FENDER
'LOVE WILL...'
Reviewer: David Weddle
North Shields singer songwriter Liam Fender has just released his highly anticipated debut EP Love Will… on Humble Angel Records. The six track record features previously released singles ‘Love Will Conquer’, ‘Don’t Follow Me Down’ and ‘Time Comes Around’.
The title track ‘Love Will…’ opens the EP with a stunning instrumental introduction to Liam’s creation. Building up with the sound of a choir harmonising while the ears are opened with a crescendo of orchestral electronica Liam builds an atmosphere and the anticipation of what is to come.
The next two tracks on the EP are singles ‘Don’t Follow Me Down’ and ‘Time Comes Around’ both of which showcase Liam’s talent for storytelling, he has a canny ability to paint a picture with his words and draws you in to the songs then hits you with the glorious guitar work which compliments his voice perfectly.
Taking what seems like an unexpected turn, Liam treats us to his version of Joy Division’s classic 1980’s anthem, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. The rendition is a total reinvention of the song with a slower almost chilled vibe to it, making it a unique and awe-inspiring addition to an already mint EP. It showcases how much control Liam has over his voice particularly at the lower end of the scale.
For me the real gem from the EP is ‘Metanoia’. The song a has a real depth to it with a bass that hits the spot and Liam’s voice is full of power and emotion as he belts out the chorus. The clever use of sudden silence after the epic electric guitar work just before the end of the song draws the attention back from the trip that Liam has taken you on back to the last track on the album ‘Love Will Conquer’.
Recently released as a single, you can check out our review here, this is a great track to end on and ties in with the opening instrumental ‘Love Will..’ Liam has given us a glimpse of hopefully great things to come. The North East of England has always been a hub of musical talent and has given us legends like Dire Straits, Lindisfarne, Pet Shop Boys and Sting to name just a few. Liam is definitely on that track, flying the banner for the North East and making it clear that music is very much alive and kicking in and around the region and that music is still world class.
‘Love Will…’ is available right now to stream right now here.
