When it comes to Rock n Roll icons, few can rival Liam Gallagher, and in terms of guitarists, John Squire is up there with the best of them. So it is no surprise that the meeting of the two produced something rather special. Their self-titled album reached the number one spot, and despite criticism from some in the music industry, the album has been a massive hit with the fans. I personally really enjoyed it, and tracks like 'Just Another Rainbow' and 'Make It Up As You Go Along', have been stuck in my head for weeks now.
Taking the album on tour to intimate venues across the UK, Liam and John managed to sell out the entire tour in just 30 seconds, a testament to the loyalty of their fanbase. We were lucky enough to catch the Newcastle show at the historic City Hall.
The venue was nearly full by the time opening act Jake Bugg took to the stage, with everyone trying to get the best spot. Jake performed a fully acoustic set, and the audience seemed to enjoy it, especially 'Lightning Bolt, which had everyone singing along.

With City Hall heating up both physically and metaphorically, Liam and John walked on stage, with chants of "Liam, Liam, Liam." from the crowd.
Playing the album in full, with the addition of Rolling Stones classic 'Jumping Jack Flash', the entire set was always going to be fairly short, but with most fans knowing that the duo only have one album's worth of material so far, that didn't come as a surprise to the crowd. As Liam said, "We're here for a good time, not a long time," and he wasn't kidding, Newcastle definitely had a good time.
We were at the front for the opening track, 'Just Another Rainbow', and Liam's distinctive voice is as strong as ever. He genuinely looked like he was soaking up the energy from the audience, pausing next to the amps to watch the crowd as John Squire put on a stunning display of his guitar skills.
It is easy to jump on the band waggon and pick apart the length of the set, etc., like others seem to have done, but I for one got a sense that the fans appreciated what they were going to see and were fully immersed in the music. They could have played a few more covers, but what would be the point? It was all Rock n Roll and no BS.
It was a night to remember. Seeing Liam Gallagher and John Squire play at a venue like City Hall to a sold-out crowd felt like a very special moment in time.
