New dub remix single and UK tour for
Sarah McQuaid
Ahead of a 21-show April-May UK tour that takes her from the West Country to Aberdeenshire and from Cumbria to Kent, folk singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid has joined forces with Tim Norman of 1990s acid and ambient dub duo UVX ((Ultraviolet Explorer)) for "If We DUB Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous", a new remix of the title track from her 2018 album If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous.
"It all started with a tongue-in-cheek conversation when we were on tour in the USA to promote the album back in 2018," explains Sarah's longtime manager, producer and sound engineer, Martin Stansbury. "Long drives and longer days led, as they often do, to rambling chats that were occasionally intense and often frivolous in nature."
One such conversation featured the development of a less-than-serious concept in which If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous could be reimagined as a dub album, akin to the Easy Star All-Stars' classic Dub Side of the Moon.
The "dub remix" idea continued to pop up from time to time as a jokey reference over the ensuing years — until one day Tim Norman asked Martin to master a dub remix he'd done for a US-based singer/songwriter. This transformed into a simple labour exchange, and "If We DUB Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous" became a reality.
Tim is best known to music mavens as one half of UVX ((Ultraviolet Explorer)), a Brighton-based duo signed to trance/dub/ambient/psychedelic label Magick Eye Records (also home to Astralasia, Magic Mushroom Band, Another Green World, Children Of Dub, Cybernaut and others).
More recently, under the name Many Angled Ones, Tim released Suicide: Songs of Alan Vega and Martin Rev, featuring Guy McKnight (formerly of Noughties indie rockers The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, now fronting The DSM IV) on vocals.
Born in Spain to a Spanish father and American mother, Sarah grew up in the USA, lived in Ireland for many years and since 2007 has resided in Cornwall, in England's rural southwest. She has released six critically acclaimed solo albums, the most recent of these being 2021's The St Buryan Sessions, recorded and filmed live sans audience in the beautiful medieval church of St Buryan, just over a mile from Sarah's home. Under the band name Mama, she also recorded the 2008 album Crow Coyote Buffalo as a duo with Zoë Pollock, writer and performer of 1991 UK Top 5 hit single "Sunshine On A Rainy Day."
Accompanied by a suitably grungy, lo-fi video that emphasises the environmental message implicit in the original song, "If We DUB Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous" is being released on Bandcamp Friday, April 7, when Bandcamp waives its fees to support independent artists impacted by the pandemic, and will be available for download and streaming via Bandcamp, Apple Music/iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube and other services.
"If We DUB Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous" is unique in the canon of Sarah McQuaid: it exists outside the cycle of "record, release, promote and repeat" that has become the norm for grassroots independent artists, and can be enjoyed as music for music's sake. A box has been ticked, even if the "Dub Any Deeper" concept has been downgraded from an album to just a single track ... for now, anyway.
