Review by David Weddle
On the 16th of June 1972, 50 years ago, the legendary master of music, David Bowie, released his iconic 5th album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars", or "Ziggy Stardust". The album took David’s status as a cult hero to the next level, and he quickly became the worldwide superstar that we all remember him as.
As a part of Pale Wizard’s 50 Years Later series, the album has been lovingly recreated with a plethora of amazing acts taking on the Bowie classic. Each act takes a track from the album and pays tribute to Bowie’s original with their own unique style.
Featuring twelve phenomenal acts, including UK band Raging Speedhorn, who tackled the lead single from the album "Suffragette City". The band have done an outstanding job of giving a new perspective on the track with a heavy sound and gritty vocals. They stayed true to the essence of the original while giving it a hard rock edge. Great work!
Other great acts include, among others, Suns of Thunder, Possessor, Kong Social, and the might Sergeant Thunderhoof, whose version of bonus track "The Jean Genie" is a real triumph. Keeping the same 70's rock vibe with a clean modern feel.
Standing out from the rest of the album, possibly because of the nostalgia associated with the track, was Mother Vulture and their cover of "Starman." They didn’t play around with it too much and have paid tribute to the original with the care and respect it deserves.
Pale Wizard have made the album available on CD and all major streaming platforms, which features 3 bonus tracks, as well as two variants on 12 inch vinyl. "The Prettiest Star" edition, transparent blue, limited to 600 copies worldwide; and the "Black Country Rock" edition, limited to just 200 copies worldwide. Visit their website to grab your copy.
