Music News MonthlyNews, Reviews and Interviews Following up on the November release of their recent single ‘Mere Slaughter’, celebrated by the likes of RTE, Louder Than War Radio, Noizze and Hardbeat Magazine, Birmingham-based post-punk / noise-rock trio Mutes return with their new single ‘Televangelist’ on February 16th 2024, taken from their upcoming fourth studio album ‘...buried where you stand’ due for release May 17th 2024 via No Sound Records. Originally conceived as a solo, primarily-ambient project by vocalist and lyricist James, Mutes released their eponymous debut EP in 2014. Things took a decidedly noisier turn with the release of Starvation Age in 2015, a full-band release that embraced the groups love of noise-rock and psychedelia. The group released their debut album No Desire in 2017 through independent label FOMA, celebrated by the likes of DIY Magazine and The Line of Best Fit.
Championed by BBC Radio 6, their second studio album Pareidolia was released in 2019, while 2021 saw the release of Dreams of Being Cornered, their third and most fully-realised record yet, which saw Mutes capture the ferocity of their live show with urgent guitar freak-outs sitting alongside wondrous synth textures and vocal melodies with calculated ease. Recorded entirely live as a three-piece with Mark Gittins at Megatone Studios, their upcoming single Televangelist is a ‘wince-and-you’ll-miss-it’ flurry of new-wave wooze and punk-rock charge; A sub-three-minute nugget of existential crisis carried with motorik purpose. Giving insight into the lyrical meaning behind the song, the band state: “Theological projections of an irresolute agnostic; torn between clinging to the assuaging hand of statism and laying waste to internalised idolatry. Catholic guilt is one hell of a trip.” ‘Televangelist’ is due for release February 16th 2024 via No Sound Records and will be available on all major streaming platforms. ONLINE:
